Monk Mindset

What does it mean to have a “monk mindset”?

You can apply the principles of monastic life by turning inward for bliss and living light.

Here are a few tips to try out:

Inner Bliss

  • Care more for others; care less what they think of you.

  • Observe the mind constantly.

  • Keep a small smile going all day.

  • If you don’t feel like smiling, then laugh. (credits to Bhante V)

  • Everyone is your friend and teacher—even the dentist.

  • Listen fully without anticipating your response.

  • Remember that life is fleeting.

  • Become a warrior for good in the world, serving others humbly.

  • Seek to understand how your mind works.

  • Smile and nod at everyone you pass without being creepy.

  • View every challenge as a chance to train positive qualities.

  • Just this pleasant moment.

  • Don’t act with an angry mind. Put it in a “timeout.”

  • Random kind deeds, like someone else’s laundry.

Living Light

  • Be content with who you are, what you have, and where you be.

  • More downtime, less downloads.

  • Let go of heavy baggage—both literal and figurative.

  • Screen-free Sundays, if possible.

  • Don’t give opinions unless they’re welcome, even online.

  • 0 checked bags when traveling.

  • Less tabs and windows open—only what you need.

  • Find time each day to simply be.

  • Give away everything you don’t use.

  • Don’t worry about shoes.

  • Use a watch (instead of phone) to keep time.

  • Airplane mode.

  • Catch sunrise and sunset.

  • Silence is golden.

  • Don’t ask unless offered. If offered, seldom refuse.

  • Keep few possessions, but take really good care of them.

  • Empty space and a full heart.

You can even pick a few of these and use them as daily affirmations for more mental clarity, tranquility & joy.
