Self-Compassion, Shame & the Inner Critic

Episode Overview
Dr. Kristin Neff returns to the FitMind Podcast to explore how self-compassion can help us navigate shame, self-criticism, and the everyday challenges of being human.
We discuss why shame narrows our perspective, how supportive touch can help calm the body’s threat response, and why self-compassion can support motivation and performance without lowering our standards. Kristin explains how separating self-worth from achievement makes it easier to learn from mistakes, take responsibility, and repair relationships.
She also shares what to do when compassionate self-talk feels unnatural, explores how naming emotions can create space around them, and leads a short guided self-compassion practice. Throughout the conversation, she emphasizes that self-compassion is about learning to meet whatever arises with awareness, kindness, and support.
