Episode Overview
Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneering psychologist and the world’s leading researcher on self-compassion, joins the FitMind Podcast to explore how treating ourselves with kindness, especially in moments of failure, can shift how we experience life. Far from being self-indulgent, self-compassion research suggests it increases motivation, resilience, and emotional well-being.
In this conversation, we break down the three core components of self-compassion and how they differ from concepts like empathy and self-esteem. Neff shares practical strategies for recognizing and reducing self-criticism, introducing a framework she calls “inner compassion”—a more stable and ego-free foundation for self-worth.
We also explore how compassion supports peak performance, emotional regulation, and even altered states of consciousness like flow. She offers a short guided practice and shares insights grounded in decades of scientific research.
From grief and forgiveness to perfectionism and burnout, this episode looks at how shifting our internal dialogue can have profound effects on both mental health and daily functioning.

Kristin Neff, PhD Bio
Dr. Kristin Neff is a psychologist and one of the world’s foremost researchers on self-compassion. A professor at the University of Texas at Austin, she was the first to develop a scientific definition of self-compassion and create a reliable way to measure it—work that’s reshaped how we understand the way we treat ourselves, especially in difficult moments.
She’s the author of Self-Compassion and Fierce Self-Compassion, books that explore what it means to bring both tenderness and strength to our inner world. Her research draws on mindfulness, neuroscience, and emotional intelligence to show that being kind to ourselves isn’t just healthier than chasing self-esteem—it’s also a better path to growth, motivation, and resilience.
Alongside her academic work, Dr. Neff teaches workshops worldwide and co-founded the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. Her message is simple but radical: self-compassion isn’t weakness—it’s a trainable skill that can change how we live.
